Teacher: Cassi Magoon
Updated: Oct 30
Meet Cassi Magoon. Cassi was raised in Columbus, Georgia, and lived in the South until her recent move to Maple Grove this past May. She’s found the people to be very friendly. She loves the nature here, and she’s glad to have a big city nearby.
Cassi moved to Minnesota after getting a job as a middle school teacher at Sojourner Truth Academy in Minneapolis. She’s passionate about teaching, and her proudest accomplishment is graduating from college with honors with a Middle Grades Education degree.
She’s had to adjust to working in the pandemic. She would usually gauge how the lesson is going based on her students’ facial expressions, but she doesn’t get that with distance learning. Additionally, as a new teacher at the school, she’s still getting to know the kids. Things aren’t perfect and it’s not quite possible for them to be, and Cassi has been working hard for her students.
Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career?
A: When I was in third grade, my elementary school counselor was teaching us about careers and goals. He told us, “You want to choose a career that is going to be around five, ten, or fifty years in the future. Choose something that will always have a need, but that you also enjoy.” I loved helping other people and I loved learning, so I decided to be a teacher.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now (and it were safe to do so), where would it be? And why?
A: Ireland! My husband and I both have family that are from Ireland, so I would love to visit the country and learn more about its history!
Q: What is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater? Anything you want to say about the movie?
A: The first movie I ever saw in theaters was the original The Lion King. I love Disney and Disney movies!
Q: What’s your favorite quote or Bible verse?
A: Isaiah 40:31 - But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: I want to visit every single waterfall in Minnesota!
Q: What is the one TV show you can’t miss?
Q: What’s the coolest or most interesting thing you’re working on right now?
A: I am working on being a healthier person! This may not sound cool or interesting to some, but I’ve lost 30 pounds since moving to Minnesota in May, and I am just trying to get in shape and live a healthier life. Maple Grove has the best biking and walking paths and makes the workouts so enjoyable.
Q: Choosing anyone alive and a non-relative: with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? Where in Maple Grove would you have lunch?
A: My two best friends, Reed and Aimee, from back in Georgia! I would take them to Granite City!
Q: Where do you see yourself in five or ten years?
A: I want to have a nice house, raising a family with my husband, and working as an academic instructional coach in a great school in Maple Grove.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
A: I have three years of ballroom dance experience, and I have a first degree blackbelt in mixed martial arts!
Q: What three words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
A: Family, love, peace.
