City Council Member: Kristy Barnett
Updated: Oct 26
Meet Kristy Barnett. Originally from San Diego, Kristy has lived in Maple Grove for 16 years. She is a member of the Junior League of Minneapolis, the Maple Grove Lions, and the Maple Grove City Council.
Kristy received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Minnesota, and she’s a huge Gophers sports fan. Kristy has worked various jobs, including project management for a mortgage lender, in the legal department of a large corporation, and for herself as a consultant.
Kristy prides herself on her work for the community. Having been a volunteer in the community and being interested in politics since she was young, running for city council in 2016 only made sense. She loves that serving at the city level allows her to see the results of her work almost immediately.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in Maple Grove?
A: I meet new people daily at city events, campaigning, and while walking my dog, Watson. Everyone is so interesting because they all have a story to tell, especially the older generation.
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: Going to the Kentucky Derby and Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. I’ve done both of them!
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about Maple Grove?
A: Applebee’s. I worked there when it first opened, and I still order the same thing every time I visit.
Q: Choosing anyone alive and a non-relative: with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? Where in Maple Grove would you have lunch?
A: Rachell Hollis. I’ve been reading her books and she seems down to earth, has lots of advice to give, and I think we could be friends. I’d take her to Redstone.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you? A: I was very good at winning radio contests. I have won tons of free concert tickets and even a free trip!
Q: If you were cast into a major motion picture and had your choice of anyone to be your co-star, who would you choose?
A: Opah: I hope she would have some good advice for me.
Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
A: Weaver Lake, Maple Grove, and my dog, Watson.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?
A: Living in Maple Grove and walking Watson every day.
